Dallas Mavericks 2009 Season Update
Posted 12/29/2009
The Dallas Mavericks have gotten off to a strong start this season and surprisingly sit atop the Southwest Division.

The Mavericks have been very close to winning an NBA title in the five or six years, but it seemed as though their window had closed.
However, the team has retooled a couple times the last few years and is playing good basketball right now.

Dirk Nowitzki leads the team in scoring as per usual with about 26 points per game. He has gotten through a tough period in his life where he struggled on the court with off-the-court distractions, and his play has blossomed.

The team acquired point guard Jason Kidd at last year's trade deadline and he has done pretty well in Dallas. A lot of fans were critical of the move, because it meant trading away a young, talented Devin Harris for an over-the-hill veteran.

Kidd has fit in well with the Dallas offense and has also shown a surprising shooting touch from the outside. He leads the club with nearly 10 assists per contest and is shooting over 41 percent from behind the arc.

The Mavericks also picked up "The Matrix" Shawn Marion, who has added another dimension to the team. Not only does he help faciliate Dallas up-temp offense and fast break, but he is a terrific defender.

It's no secret that the Mavericks have struggled to stop just about anyone and anything the past decade, but Marion is doing his part to solve the problem.

Dallas has also done an excellent job improving their depth. The bench has been a real factor this year. Surprisingly, veteran forward Tim Thomas has proven to be one of the team's better pickups. Forwards Eric Dampier, Drew Gooden and Kris Humphries have all made contributions.

The Mavericks are certainly showing the moxie it takes to hang with the big boys in the Western Conference. Whether they have the defense and the toughness to make it happen in the playoffs is anyone's best guess.
