The Chicago Bulls could not overcome the Miami Heat in last year's playoffs, making it clear what the team must do to improve its chances at winning an NBA title.
Derrick Rose played well throughout the postseason, but it became obvious he was being asked to do way too much. The Bulls desperately need a significant scoring threat to play alongside Rose and take some of the pressure off his back.
The Bulls thought they were getting that type of player in Carlos Boozer, but he has been injury-prone and struggled in the playoffs. Boozer is a quality low-post player, but he can't put a team on his back and carry them. He does form a nice tandem inside with Joakim Noah, who is one of the hardest working players in the league.
Luol Deng is a similar type of player. He is a decent shooter and will make teams pay if he is left alone, but he isn't the type of player who can take the pressure off Rose and shoulder a sizeable load. The Bulls thought the signing of Kyle Korver would give them a spot-up shooter to stretch the defense, but he hasn't made a meaningful impact...yet.
Chicago would do well to package Deng and potentially another couple of quality players, or maybe even Boozer, to acquire a superstar from another team. Carmelo Anthony would be a good example, except that New York already traded for him last year. They did snare Richard Hamilton in free agency, but he isn't the star he once was.
Chicago is most definitely an NBA title contender and one of the real threats to Miami coming out of the Eastern Conference. However, Rose can't do it all by himself, and the Heat's top three players are significantly better than Chicago's best trio. Still, they'll be a fun team to watch this season to see if they can get winning chemistry going.
