Charlotte Bobcats 2009 Season Update
Posted 12/29/2009
The Charlotte Bobcats are struggling to stay in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference because they still lack a stud player who can carry the team on a nightly basis.
The team traded for disgruntled shooting guard Stephen Jackson earlier in the season, a very risky move given his attitude problems.
Jackson is exactly the type of player head coach Larry Brown doesn't want on his team, which makes the situation all the more interesting.
So far, Jackson has been close to a model citizen and a scorer that the Bobcats desperately needed. He leads the team by averaging 19 points a game and stretches defenses with his outside shooting.
Gerald Wallace is 100 percent healthy this season after back and concussion problems last year and his production has been a big boost.
He is first on the team in rebounds and second on the team in scoring, which results in him averaging a double-double each game.
He is also an absolute force on the defensive end, intimidating opposing players who enter the paint by swatting shots.
Point guard D.J. Augustin is now in his second NBA season and has been a major disappointment. He has seen his minutes really diminish as Raymond Felton has taken over the starting job.
Then again, I could have told you that the diminutive guard who isn't really very quick would really struggle at the next level. He is rarely able to create his own shot because he's just not quick enough, and his lack of height makes it very difficult to shoot over taller defenders.
Felton has taken the starting job and run with it, averaging 12 points and more than five assists per game. He is also a North Carolina alum, something he and the head coach have in common.
Boris Diaw and Raja Bell, who both came over in a trade with the Phoenix Suns, have been steady contributors on both the offensive and defensive ends. I still think Diaw has an immense amount of talent but might just never realize it because he is so passive on the court.
The Bobcats have some talent on their roster, but I'm not sure it's quite enough to make a playoff push. Then again, things are so wide open in the bottom half in the Eastern Conference that anything is possible.
