Boston Celtics 2009 Season Update
Posted 12/29/2009
The Boston Celtics sit comfortably in first place in the Atlantic Division and appear to be in no type of danger to lose the lead at all this year.

Getting back a healthy Kevin Garnett is always going to do wonders for your team, but it's worth mentioning that he still doesn't seem to be 100 percent on that surgically-repaired knee.

Meanwhile, it's becoming obvious that this is point guard Rajon Rondo's team. He is having the torch passed to him by the big three star veterans of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Garnett.

Those players are still good and can make big plays to win games, but they are certainly now past their peak.

Pierce, Allen and Garnett are the top three scorers on the team in that order. Garnett's had a dropoff on the defensive end, where his rebounds and blocks are way down. Kendrick Perkins now leads the team in rebounds with around eight per contest.

Rondo is averaging nearly a double-double with 12 points and just under 10 assists per game, and is also a fierce defender. He has as many steals as turnovers, which is something you love to see out of your point guard.

The Celtics added Rasheed Wallace in the offseason, and so far he has managed to mesh well with the team. There was some concern that his attitude could be a problem in Boston, but he seems to have toned things down.

Wallace would be more of a help to the team if he spent less time bombing away three-point shots and got down and dirty inside, but he likes to float around the perimeter.

Tony Allen, Eddie House, Marquis Daniels and Shelden Williams have all provided quality minutes off the bench. House seems to bring an instant infusion of energy whenever he steps onto the court.

The Celtics may have an aging group of core players, but they are still far and away the best team in their division. They remain one of the top three teams in the Eastern Conference and among the best in the NBA, so a run at another title is not out of the question.
