The Boston Celtics head into the postseason as a team that seems to be trying to rebuild while still hanging onto its key pieces, which is only compounded by the season-ending injury suffered by Rajon Rondo.
Without Rondo, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett had to step up and do more throughout the season despite another year of wear and tear on their bodies. Then again, some have made the point that the Celtics are actually playing better with Rondo, who tends to hog the ball too much and hurt the team's offensive rhythm.
The Celtics might be able to get past the first round on sheer guts, guile and will from Pierce and Garnett, as well as the suddenly rejuvenated Jeff Green. The former first-round pick has finally fully recovered from heart surgery and it's showing on the court, where he has become Boston's most dynamic player.
The team could also receive somewhat of an emotional lift from the tragedy that occurred at the Boston Marathon and try to rally the city, but it's hard to see this aging group making a real run at the Eastern Conference Finals. A first round victory over the New York Knicks will take a strong defensive effort, especially when it comes to guarding the three-point line. It also remains to be seen whether the Celtics have anyone on their roster that can slow down Carmelo Anthony.
