Atlanta Hawks 2008/2009 Season Update Many believed the Atlanta Hawks would be the first team to fire its head coach this season, but no prediction could have been farther off base.

The Hawks have proved that last year's late surge to the final playoff spot and pushing the world champion Boston Celtics to Game 7 in the first round of the playoffs was certainly not a fluke.

While Atlanta is still way behind the Orlando Magic for the Southeast Division lead, they are 30-21 and looking at a solid seed in the playoffs.

The Hawks are certainly one team that no one in the Eastern Conference wants to see after the matchup problems they gave last year's NBA champions.

One reason for the team's strong season thus far is the fact that they have been able to avoid major injuries that have sidelined the players for any significant time.

Joe Johnson is clearly the team's top player, averaging 21.5 points per game but also adding 6.2 assists and 4.5 rebounds.

It's amazing what Johnson has been able to do since leaving the Phoenix Suns a few years ago. He was a solid player for Phoenix and everyone knew he had a lot of talent, but he has really come into his own as a leader for the Hawks.

Mike Bibby isn't the player he once was, but trading for the point guard has still proven to be a good move. Bibby is averaging 16 points per game and has an excellent assist-to-turnover ratio.

Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Al Horford are three young players that continue to improve and should become the backbone of this team for many years to come.

As a Hawks fan, there is a lot to look forward to both in the coming months and the coming years. This team looks like it has some staying power and is only going to continue to get better.
