The Toronto Blue Jays finally gave up on trying to compete in the American League East, opting to cut salary and trade away a host of players in the offseason.

The Blue Jays biggest deal of the offseason involved outfielder Vernon Wells, who was shipped to the Los Angeles Angels. The Blue Jays didn't want to pay him big money anymore and the Angels were looking to improve their club after missing on the top free agents.

Toronto also traded pitcher Shawn Marcum to the Milwaukee Brewers, figuring they have enough depth in their starting rotation to overcome the loss. They do have a lot of young, talented pitchers, but injuries have been common among their starters in recent years.

With Wells gone and having traded Alex Rios to the Chicago White Sox a few years back, it's going to be tough for the Jays to score runs.
Jose Bautista returns off of a 50 home run season, but no one in their right mind can expect that type of production again.

Adam Lind was a disappointment after a breakout 2009 campaign, so the Jays are hopeful he bounces back in 2011. If he and Travis Snider can hit the way they are capable of, Toronto's outfield could still be formidable despite the loss of Wells.

There is still some talent left over on this team, but it's few and far between. The Blue Jays look destined for last place in the AL East barring a significant number of injuries to another team in the division.
