2010 Texas Rangers Season Preview
Posted 3/28/2010
The Texas Rangers were one of baseball's biggest surprises last year, which gives them confidence and a lot of hope for 2010.
The Rangers finished with 87 wins and were battling for a playoff spot for much of the season, which is way more than was expected from a team that seemed unsure whether it was trying to compete now or build for the future.
Apparently, you can do both at the same time, at least in the case with the Rangers.
Texas showed that they are serious about making a run at the American League West crown this year by signing free agent pitcher Rich Harden to a contract.
To make that deal happen, the Rangers had to trade away veteran hurler Kevin Millwood to dump salary that could be used to sign Harden. Still, Harden is an upgrade so long as he can stay healthy.
The Rangers have an interesting starting rotation which help up surprisingly well last year. Scott Feldman, Matt Harrison and Brandon McCarthy are all young guys that exceeded expectations. The pressure is certainly on for them to improve in 2010.
Speaking of health, the Rangers are looking forward to getting Josh Hamilton back in 2010. Hamilton fought injuries most of last year and was never able to get back to being the MVP candidate that he can be.
To add some additional pop to the lineup, the Rangers signed former MVP outfielder Vladamir Guerrero, who left the Los Angeles Angels via free agency.
Guerrero is a long ways away from his MVP days, but Texas is hoping that a one-year contract will motivate the oft-injured outfielder now turned designated hitter.
The Rangers have a good mix of young, talented players and established veterans around the infield. Michael Young and Ian Kinsler are great, while Elvis Andrus and Nelson Cruz are two younger players looking to make their mark.
It's always hard to figure out what will happen in the A.L. West, where the Angels always seem to be at the top and the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics take turns challenging for the division.
It's just as confusing in 2010 as ever before, but don't count out the Texas Rangers.
