St Louis Cardinals 2011 Season Preview
The St. Louis Cardinals surprisingly fell short in last year's National League Central Race, and it was strange to see them miss the playoffs.
The Cardinals hope to bounce back this year and take the division away from the Cincinnati Reds. There is a sense of urgency for the Cardinals given the possibility that first baseman Albert Pujols will be a free agent after the season and could leave St. Louis.
The good news is that the Cardinals really didn't lose anything or anyone of value in the offseason. The bad news is that they also didn't improve their club in any significant way, which will make it hard to catch the Reds.
They did add Lance Berkman, but who knows how much he has left in the tank. He really struggled last year splitting time between Houston and New York. Maybe a return to the National League will help.
The Cardinals are excited to see what Colby Rasmus can do in 2011. A lot of scouts believe Rasmus is set for a breakthrough season, and that would certainly give Pujols and Matt Holliday some more protection.
St. Louis certainly has the players to overtake the Reds, but health could be an issue, especially with the starting rotation. Pujols' contract situation could also become a major distraction throughout the season.
