San Francisco Giants 2010 Playoffs Preview
Posted 10/4/2010
The San Francisco Giants hung around in the National League West and then took advantage of San Diego's struggles down the stretch to win the division title.
San Francisco's starting pitchers threw 15 straight games without allowing more than three runs, a remarkable feat. Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are a fearsome 1-2 punch while Jonathan Sanchez and Barry Zito have also pitched well.
Free agent pickup Aubrey Huff exceeded expectations all season long and finished as the team leader in average, home runs, runs and RBI's. Catcher Buster Posey had a tremendous rookie season and gave the lineup a big boost.
While San Francisco's pitching staff is strong, the fact that Huff was such a dominant offensive player in their lineup goes to show that their hitting is a big weakness. It gives them very little margin for error, and they have a tough time climbing back into games if they fall behind in the first few innings.
The Giants got so desperate offensively that they put in a waiver claim for outfielder Jose Guillen, who was released by the Kansas City Royals. When you are picking up the Royals' trash, you know things aren't going well.
To advance at all in the postseason, San Francisco is going to have to pitch and field extremely well while also producing any time they get runners in scoring position. It's likely going to be a short playoff stay for the Giants.
