2010 San Diego Padres Season Preview
Posted 3/28/2010
If it wasn't for playing in one of the wildest divisions in baseball, the San Diego Padres would have finished with a really bad record in 2009.

Instead, their somewhat respectable record masks how truly bad this team played last year, and there is little hope for improvement in 2010.

This team is in full rebuilding mode, which was officially signaled when they traded away ace Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox for a bunch of prospects.

With Peavy out of the equation, the ace role has been turned over to Chris Young. Young certainly has the talent and demeanor to handle it, and he already got in a test run last season.

In the Peavy trade, the Padres acquired starter Clayton Richard, who should see a lot of action in 2010. Richard is a former top prospect who could help rebuild the Padres' depleted starting rotation.

The team will also give Sean Gallagher a long look. Gallagher has bounced around but is a little underrated and could give an unexpected boost to the rotation.

Veteran Jon Garland also came over in the Peavy trade and should help to stabilize the staff. He could also serve as a mentor to some of the younger pitchers. It's always important to have a veteran presence to help out with the young pitchers on a rebuilding club.

Rumors continue to fly that first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is the next to go, but he is cheap considering the numbers he puts up. He is also the only reason to go watch the Padres play, and the team is asking a king's ransom for him.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if some contending team looking for a big bat to put them over the top can strike a deal for him at the July 31 trade deadline.

The Padres are hoping for a big season out of third baseman Chase Headley, a former top prospect. They hope he and Gonzalez can provide some protection for each other in the lineup.

The Padres are going absolutely nowhere but the cellar of the National League West in 2010. It's going to be a very long season for San Diego fans, but hey, at least the weather is perfect out there.
