News and Information
The Philadelphia Phillies are coming off of a season in which they helped bring home a world title to their city for the first time in nearly three decades.

The Phillies certainly didn't overwhelm anyone in the regular season, but did just enough to win the National League East title.

Philadelphia didn't make any major splashes on the free agent market, but they did do a nice job of re-signing many of their own free agents. Keeping that continuity and chemistry is certainly a key to their success.

The one player they did not re-sign was left fielder Pat Burrell, who had one of his best seasons ever in a Philadelphia uniform.

The much-maligned outfielder left Philadelphia to play for the Tampa Bay Rays, but the Phillies already had a better plan in place, signing former Seattle Mariners outfielder Raul Ibanez to a three-year contract.

The team could be short-handed to start the season, as All-Star second baseman Chase Utley underwent hip surgery in the offseason. Utley is expected back around Opening Day, but you never know with hip surgery.

The Phillies are hopeful that first baseman Ryan Howard will bounce back after a disappointing season by his standards and can pick up the offensive slack should Utley have to miss any time.

The rotation is led by Cole Hamels, who managed to stay healthy and finished off his best season in the big leagues in 2008. Joe Blanton is a welcome addition who will eat a lot of innings if nothing else.

The team re-signed veteran left-handed pitcher Jamie Moyer to a two-year contract and also released disappointing pitcher Adam Eaton.

Philadelphia's bullpen, which was often their achilles heel in past seasons, became a major strength last year in helping them win the World Series. Closer Brad Lidge was nearly unhittable, and the rest of the bullpen seemed to feed off of his energy.

Philadelphia is probably the favorite to win the division thanks to their title as defending world champions despite the fact that the New York Mets made major offseason moves and are probably the better team on paper.

Philadelphia Phillies 2008 Playoff Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies are following up last year's miraculous late surge to catch the New York Mets and win the National League East race with another battle with their biggest rival.

The Phillies have been very much like a roller coaster this year, experiencing their share of highs and lows.

Some of the reason for their large number of winning and losing streaks is the makeup of their lineup. With a lot of power hitters who tend to be very streaky, the team finds their bats to be often very hot or very cold.

While first baseman Ryan Howard is partly to blame because of his low average and incredibly high strikeout totals, he is not alone. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins has returned from an MVP year and been a major disappointment. Second baseman Chase Utley got off to a blazing start over the first two months but has underachieved much of the year.

Philadelphia's starting rotation is solid but unspectacular. Cole Hamels has No. 1 type stuff but has still not been able to move into that elite class of star pitchers. Jamie Moyer has arguably been their second best pitcher. He is so consistent from start to start and rarely forces the bullpen into early work.

Brett Myers has been the wild card for the rotation, but so far, so good since he returned from the minor leagues. Myers was terrible for the first half of the season but has been outstanding ever since agreeing to go on a minor league stint to work on his stuff.

To strengthen the rotation, the Phillies made a deal with the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Joe Blanton at the trade deadline. Blanton, who was struggling with the A's at the time, hasn't done much better in Philadelphia.

Probably the biggest surprise this year has been the much-maligned bullpen, which has been way better than advertised. Closer Brad Lidge has been lights out, and the only time the bullpen struggled was the first month of the season while he was on the disabled list.

With the Mets bullpen really hurting without closer Billy Wagner, the Phillies have to be considered the favorite to win the division. However, they can't afford any type of prolonged slump at the plate in September if they want to be playing in October.
