The Philadelphia Phillies finally got a clue this offseason, realizing that their team was in a long decline and decided to start the rebuilding process by trading away some of their core players.
The biggest name to head out of town was lifelong Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins. They also traded Marlon Byrd and will continue to try and deal other bloated contracts to add payroll flexibility.
Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley all remain as the final pieces from the team's glory days. No one will take Howard while the team has suitors for Lee and Hamels but are demanding too much in return.
The Phillies don't have much hope heading into the 2015 season, and you wonder how long the team will continue to draw as well as it has over the past decade. At least if the team tore it down and started the rebuilding process, fans could have hope that the front office has a clue.
This is pretty much the least exciting team ever. At least with bad teams, they usually have some prospects worth watching. The Phillies just have a bunch of veterans past their prime trying to hold on for another pay day.
The Washington Nationals remain the class of the division, and it now appears as though the Miami Marlins are getting serious about trying to be a playoff team. If Hamels and Lee have great seasons, maybe the Phillies hang around .500, but it's really past time to rebuild.
