New York Mets 2011 Season Preview The New York Mets were not very active in the offseason, but that's probably smart for a team with some financial issues and a lot of overpaid, veteran players that they want to clear off of their roster.

The Mets signed pitcher Chris Young to a cheap, one-year contract, which could turn into the smartest move they made all winter. Young could bounce back from his injuries and have a terrific year.

The team also made a manager change, firing Jerry Manuel and hiring Terry Collins. Sandy Alderson is the new general manager, replacing Omar Minaya, so there is an entirely different regime in place.

Third baseman David Wright and shortstop Jose Reyes both return despite persistent rumors throughout the offseason that they were on the trade block for the right price. Trading them would gut the Mets of their two stars, but it would be the fastest way to infuse the organization with young talent and start to rebuild.

Don't be surprised if the Mets are one of the more active teams at the trade deadline if they are well below the .500 mark. Reyes is almost certain to be traded, and others could follow.

New York has talent on their roster, but also way too much dead wood. This is a team that will probably flounder for much of the season in one of baseball's toughest divisions and would do well to finish in the middle of the pack.
