Minnesota Twins

News and Information
After trading away ace Johan Santana for prospects and letting All-Star center fielder Torii Hunter leave via free agency, expectations were extremely low for the Minnesota Twins last season.

However, the Twins surprised everyone by battling for the division title down to the final series of the season. After overachieving last year, a division title has become the expectation heading into 2009.

Minnesota tends to struggle to put runs on the board and often resorts to small-ball to make it happen.

The backbone of the offense is catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau. Michael Cuddyer has a steady bat, and outfielder Delmon Young has the ability to be a major force if he can cut down on his strikeout totals.

The Twins are expecting big things this year out of one of the prospects acquired in the Santana deal. Center fielder Carlos Gomez is a five-tool player whose inconsistencies and dumb mistakes were the source of a lot of frustration in his rookie season.

Despite the loss of Santana, the starting rotation was pretty good last year and should be even better in 2009.

Scott Baker appears to have taken over the role as staff ace after showing surprising success last year. Kevin Slowey isn't far behind Baker. Slowey is often compared to Brad Radke, but some would argue he has better stuff.

The big wild card in the rotation is Francisco Liriano, who was absolutely electric before Tommy John surgery. He experienced mixed results in his return last year, but did improve as the season progressed.

Nick Blackburn is a quality fourth starter, and the team will look to find someone to round out their starting rotation during spring training. Boof Bonser is always an option, but they like him more in the bullpen.

Speaking of the bullpen, Joe Nathan has quickly established himself as one of the top closers in the game. He doesn't get much press because he is overshadowed by Mariano Rivera and Jonathan Palpebon, but he might be better than both of those guys.

Look for the Twins to battle it out with a couple of other teams in a tight race in the American League Central Division.

Minnesota Twins 2008 Playoff Preview

The Minnesota Twins have no business being in the playoff hunt, but here they are in early September battling it out with the Chicago White Sox for the American League Central crown and possibly a wild card spot.

Despite trading away ace Johan Santana for prospects before the start of the season and letting star center fielder Torii Hunter walk in free agency, the Twins have managed to compete for a division title even though analysts predicted a losing record.

Many felt the Twins would be little more than an afterthought, a team in the midst of a rebuilding project after losing its two best players. However, the depth of the minor league system has proven to be their recipe for success.

At the plate, the Twins have gotten some type of production from just about everyone in the lineup. First baseman Justin Morneau and catcher Joe Mauer have led the way as per usual, but the team has received quality contributions from outfielder Delmon Young and other players as well.

The starting pitching has been the major surprise, as the youth and inexperience of the rotation has been overshadowed by all of the talent.

Scott Baker has been the team's best pitcher all season long, but Kevin Slowey has gotten better and better as the year has progressed. Francisco Liriano struggled early, but he has shown significant improvement after getting some time to shake off the rust associated with Tommy John surgery.

There isn't necessarily a true ace on this staff, but all of the pitchers throw strikes and give the team a chance to win.

The bullpen has been solid thanks to closer Joe Nathan, who makes everyone's job a little easier in the ninth inning. To solidify the bullpen, the team acquired reliever Eddie Guardado from the Texas Rangers just a few weeks ago.

Still, the small run differential has those around baseball believing the Twins can't sustain their current pace.

Everyone keeps waiting for the Twins to finally fade away, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Expect the Twins to stay in the hunt for the division title or a wild card berth right up to the final game of the season.
