Minnesota Twins 2011 Season Preview
Posted 3/9/2011
The Minnesota Twins were able to take the division crown last year and are hoping to make it two years in a row.
Minnesota managed to capture the division title without the help of All-Star first baseman Justin Morneau, who missed extensive time after suffering a concussion. The team is still easing him back into baseball activities, which has to be a concern going forward.
It was a very quiet offseason for Minnesota, which re-signed a couple of veterans and made some minor trades.
The team was able to bring back pitcher Carl Pavano, who was expected to be a hot commodity on the free agent market. He will help anchor a rotation that also features Francisco Liriano, who could be primed for a big season.
Minnesota also re-signed designated Jim Thome, who was outstanding in a limited number of plate appearances. He is also a great clubhouse presence and hasn't declined much despite creeping into his 40's.
The Twins have a solid starting rotation and mediocre lineup. Nothing about this club is flashy, but they tend to get results under manager Ron Gardenhire. They will once again be a contender for the division crown, but Morneau needs to fully recover to have any chance at reaching the postseason.
