Milwaukee Brewers 09-10 Season Recap
Posted 10/17/2010
The Milwaukee Brewers finished in third place in the National League Central and eight games under .500, resulting in the termination of manager Ken Macha almost as soon as the season came to a close.
Macha may or may not be a great manager, but it's hard to blame him for the team's inability to match their run to the 2008 playoffs. That team was anchored by ace C.C. Sabathia for more than half of the season.
Milwaukee's starting rotation really misses an ace who can be the stopper every fifth day. Yovanni Gallardo is a promising young arm, but he isn't nearly ready to handle the responsibility of staff ace.
The rest of the starting rotation leaves a lot to be desired, and the bullpen isn't exactly solid, either. Milwaukee isn't in one of the tougher divisions, but their starting pitching isn't up to snuff.
It also didn't help that first baseman Prince Fielder got off to a sluggish start and that the club had to deal with trade rumors surrounding their slugger from the first day of the season all the way up until the July 31 deadline.
The Brewers have some quality young pieces scattered around the diamond, but it's hard to win when the team doesn't go out and aggressively pursue significant upgrades through free agency. There is also concern that Fielder won't be re-signed after next season, leaving a huge hole at first base.
