2010 Florida Marlins Season Preview
Posted 3/28/2010
With a new ballpark on the way and a promise to spend more money, the Florida Marlins have some hope entering the 2010 season.

The team surprised everyone by winning 87 games last year and hanging around in the National League wild card race right down to the final couple of weeks of the season.

The two Florida teams are similar in the fact that neither has a good stadium or money to spend to field a competitive team, yet their farm systems are so great that they allow them to make a playoff run every now and again.

Obviously the Florida Marlins have been way more successful than the Tampa Bay Rays at this as evidenced by their two World Series titles, but the same general theory still applies to both clubs.

All talk with the Marlins begins with shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who is considered by some to best the best player in all of baseball.

Ramirez truly can do it all. He hits for a high average, lots of power, drives in runs, steals bases and plays great defense. He is also considered a great teammate by his peers.

So far, double-play mate Dan Uggla hasn't been traded elsewhere, which has been the rumor for nearly a year now. Uggla isn't a great defensive player, but he does hit for a lot of power considering his position.

Other top offensive players include first baseman Jorge Cantu and outfielder Cody Ross. The Marlins also have very high expectations of outfielder Cameron Maybin, a former top prospect of the Detroit Tigers who is still trying to learn what it takes to succeed at the major league level.

The starting rotation is led by tall right-hander Josh Johnson, who rebounded quickly from arm surgery to have a solid 2009 campaign. With a year under his belt, Johnson could be ready to do big things in 2010.

There is plenty of talent behind Johnson in the rotation. Chris Volstad and Anibal Sanchez were both top prospects, and big things are expected of Andrew Miller and Ricky Volasco.

Behind those guys, there are a host of other talented pitchers who will be making a bid for the starting rotation should those guys falter.

It's always hard to predict how the Marlins will fare, but this team has the talent to compete for a wild card berth in 2010.
