2010 Colorado Rockies Season Preview
Posted 3/28/2010
The Colorado Rockies reached the playoffs last year but suffered an early exit at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Much the same team returns for Colorado in 2010, and they are hoping to once again reach the postseason but achieve different results once they get there.

The offense is certainly explosive enough to carry Colorado deep into October. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is poised for a huge season now that he is completely healthy and should regain his place as one of the best at his position in all of baseball.

Outfielder Brad Hawpe is a masher who is capable of 30 home runs, and first baseman Todd Helton is still a professional hitter despite seeing a drop in his numbers.

The Rockies have high hopes for Carlos Gonzalez, the young left-fielder who sparked the offense when he came up from the minor leagues last season.

The Rockies traded for a proven closer at the deadline last year in Houston Street, and he has made just about everyone forget about the loss of Brian Fuentes.

Colorado let third baseman Garrett Atkins walk in the offseason, disappointed that his numbers have steadily declined the last couple of seasons. To fill the hole, they signed veteran Melvin Mora.

Mora had several good seasons in Baltimore but saw his numbers also really fall off last year. Colorado is hoping that a change of scenery re-energizes him, as well as the thin air of Coors Field.

The starting rotation is led by Ubaldo Jimenez and Aaron Cook. Those veterans are going to have to show the way to some of the younger guys, as starting pitching is still the biggest question on this team.

Colorado is hopeful that left-hander Greg Smith, who came over in the trade with the Athletics, can become a reliable starter.

The Rockies have always had a hard time luring free agent pitchers to Colorado becaue of the ballpark's poor reputation with its thin air and short fences.

The National League West is usually wide open, and this year should be no different. Expect the Rockies to make their usual second-half push and be knocking on the door of the postseason.
