The Chicago Cubs are coming off another losing season, yet it's hard to remember the last time that hopes were so high going into a season.
The Cubs opened up the checkbook in the offseason, signing Jon Lester away from the Boston Red Sox. That had to feel good for Theo Epstein, and it gives his team a legitimate ace and a veteran at the top of his rotation.
Chicago also brought back Jason Hammel, who pitched well last year before the team traded him to the Oakland Athletics, along with Jeff Samardzija, to acquire Addison Russell. The Cubs didn't get Samardzija back, but Hammel seemed to like Chicago.
Epstein has done a tremendous job acquiring young talent. The Houston Astros are the only team that can even come close to comparing to what the Cubs have managed to acquire through trades and the draft.
There is a lot of hype surrounding guys like Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Javier Baez and Jorge Soler. In some cases, there are multiple top prospects that play the same positions, leading to some interesting decisions.
It may seem outrageous, but the Cubs are a legitimate contender in both the NL Central and wild card races. They have a ton of inexperience, but few teams in baseball have more overall talent.
