Boston Red Sox 2008 Playoff Preview
What started out as such a promising season has taken a turn for the worse for the Boston Red Sox, but the American League East power still has the opportunity to repeat as World Series champions. The Red Sox got off to a hot start this year but have since been overtaken by the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the division. Even worse, the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox are both right there with the Red Sox in a battle for the wild card spot. Tim Wakefield is returning from the disabled list and David Ortiz appears to be healthy and returning to form, but there are major question marks down the stretch. After trading away outfielder Manny Ramirez, the team certainly lost a lot of its offensive punch despite receiving Jason Bay in return. Ramirez has gone on a tear since being dealt to the Dodgers, and he always had a knack for delivering in the clutch. To make matterw for the offense, outfielder J.D. Drew is on the disabled list with a sore back and there is no timetable for his return. Drew has been arguably the team's best overall offensive player this year. Despite all of that, the biggest concern has to be the arm of ace Josh Beckett. He has been bothered by a tingling sensation in his hands for much of the season and is now complaining about elbow discomfort. That's not a good sign. The Red Sox can certainly make the playoffs, although it's highly doubtful that they make it as a division winner. Simply holding off the White Sox and Twins and getting into the postseason would be an accomplishment at this point. And once you get into the postseason, anything can happen, as we have seen over the past decade. GreatSeats.com uses secure servers to process your order for the Boston Red Sox.
