Arizona Diamondbacks 2011 Season Preview
Posted 3/9/2011
The Arizona Diamondbacks struggled much of last year but played better down the stretch, giving their fans some hope heading into the 2011 season.
The Diamondbacks put star outfielder Justin Upton on the trade block in the offseason only to pull him back when offers weren't meeting their crazy demands. Upton's young, so it's a smart move to keep him since he is one piece they should be building around.
Arizona finally tired of Mark Reynolds and his strikeouts, trading him to Baltimore for an unproven reliever. Reynolds saw his average drop and his strikeouts soar last year, but they gave up a big, young bat for nothing.
Ace Brandon Webb didn't pitch at all last year because of his injured arm, and they let him walk in the offseason. It hurt to let go of such a big part of the team, but his fastball velocity still hasn't rebounded.
They spent their entire offseason rebuilding their bullpen, which is a questionable way to use resources. Relievers' performances vary greatly from year to year, so it's not a good place to spend a lot of money.
Arizona should be better in 2011, but not by much. The organization has a lot of talent, but the front office seems a little bit confused as to how to rebuild the club. I'd be a little concerned about the direction of the team if I were an Arizona fan.
