2010 Arizona Diamondbacks Season Preview
Posted 3/28/2010
It was a disappointing 2009 campaign for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who found themselves out of the playoff race in the early summer months.
The Diamondbacks are still trying to build their ballclub, but they are optimistic that they will see improvement in the win column in 2010.
Get ready for a huge season from outfielder Justin Upton. Upton, a player often compared to a young Ken Griffey, Jr., played very well last year despite dealing with injuries.
Upton has a tremendous blend of power and speed. He is the type of player who could hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases.
Third baseman Mark Reynolds is a masher, but he is starting to cut down on his strikeout totals and raise his average. The Diamondbacks are hopeful that the trend continues this season.
Shortstop Stephen Drew was very good last season, and the Diamondbacks believe he has finally turned the corner in his development. He will team with second baseman Kelly Johnson to hold down the middle of the diamond.
This rotation could be tremendous, but you just never know with young pitching. Brandon Webb and Dan Haren could be No. 1 starters on just about any major league team and form a tremendous 1-2 punch.
The Diamondbacks acquired pitcher Edwin Jackson from the Detroit Tigers after blossoming in 2009. Jackson could really flourish in the National League, where lineups are not nearly as explosive.
Jackson always had a lot of talent, but he never seemed to fully realize his potential in his short time with the Tampa Bay Rays. After his rapid development in Detroit, he could be on his way to stardom.
The team has high hopes for pitcher Ian Kennedy, who comes over to Arizona after failing to live up to the hype with the New York Yankees. A former top prospect, Kennedy might really benefit from a change of scenery.
Don't expect miracles from the Diamondbacks in 2010, as the team is very much still building for the future. With that said, you never know what can happen in the wild, wild West.
