Arizona Diamondbacks 2011 Playoffs Outlook
Posted 10/4/2011
The upstart Arizona Diamondbacks surprised pretty much everyone by rather easily rolling their way to a National League West title and a berth in this year's MLB playoffs.
Outfielder Justin Upton finally blossomed this year, coming into his own and making a strong case for the National League MVP award. Fellow outfielder Chris Young has also been very productive despite yet another season with a subpar batting average.
The Diamondbacks are still trying to rebuild their starting pitching staff, which is lead by Daniel Hudson, and that will certainly be a disadvantage for them throughout the playoffs. They do have a potent back end of their bullpen with J.J. Putz and David Hernandez, two relievers who have far exceeded expectations this season.
While you have to give Arizona a lot of credit for reaching the playoffs, you can't go overboard. They won a division that is seemingly up for grabs each and every season and largely considered the worst in all of baseball. The Dodgers were a mess this year, the Padres were rebuilding and the Giants and Rockies could just never seem to get on track.
The Diamondbacks face off against the Milwaukee Brewers in the divisional round of the playoffs and have to be considered significant underdogs. Anything can happen in a short series, but expect the Diamondbacks to have a short postseason stay.
