2007 Virginia Tech Hokies Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
Virginia Tech's season was a little inconsistent but a success in the end, mirroring the play of their starting quarterback Sean Glennon. With better quarterback play, 2006 could have been a season to remember.

The Hokies concluded a 10-3 campaign with a 31-24 loss to Georgia in the Peach Bowl, which was essentially a home game for the Bulldogs. The bowl game was a perfect example of Glennon's shortcomings, as he threw for just 94 yards and three interceptions in the loss.

Glennon will return for another season and the Hokies hope that the experience of a full season at quarterback will translate into more consistent play and better decision-making in 2007.

Running back Branden Ore also returns and should be an electrifying player on offense and a candidate for several honors and awards come the end of the season. The diminutive back has the toughness and quickness to break tackles and the speed to run away from defenders. He did get a little banged up last season and missed a couple of games, but if he can stay healthy, watch out.

As always, when we talk Virginia Tech, we talk about head coach Frank Beamer and "Beamer Ball," otherwise known as the special teams. And boy are they special in Virginia Tech, where the team routinely returns kickoffs and punts for touchdowns while blocking opponent's punts and field goal attempts.

Special teams are a huge part of the game, especially on the college level where one play can swing the momentum one way or the other. College players aren't as experienced or mature as their professional counterparts, so big swings in momentum tend to have a bigger effect.

The schedule is favorable, with games at LSU, Clemson and Georgia Tech being arguably the toughest on their schedule. LSU lost a lot of key players from last year's team and the Georgia Tech game will provide a chance for revenge after the Yellow Jackets won in Blacksburg last season. Speaking of Blacksburg, Lane Stadium has to be considered one of the toughest places to play in the ACC.

Glennon probably isn't talented enough for the Hokies to think about a national championship, but Virginia Tech will challenge for the ACC Championship and a berth in a BCS bowl in 2007.
