2007 USC Trojans Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
USC was in the national championship conversation last year but two losses, especially one late in the season, ended any thoughts of playing for a title. Instead, they finished the year with an impressive victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl.
You would think a two-loss season that ended with a convincing Rose Bowl victory would be thought of as a great year, but for a team that routinely plays for national championships, it was certainly a disappointment.
The good news is that USC will find itself one of the favorites to win the national championship in 2007, much of it due to the return of quarterback John David Booty for a second season under center.
However, Booty will have to adjust to throwing to different wide receivers with former standouts Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith now playing on Sundays in the NFL. No need to worry though, USC's roster is stacked with playmakers for Booty. Patrick Turner could be the go-to guy this year.
Booty definitely improved throughout the year and really finished with a flourish, torching Michigan's strong defense for 391 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. The experience he gained in 2006 will definitely help him be more consistent from game to game.
Head coach Pete Carroll is an incredible recruiter that has returned USC to prominence ever since he left the NFL and was hired to take over the Trojans. The roster seems to have an endless supply of playmakers, and it seems like USC simply reloads rather than rebuilds.
USC should be fantastic on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. They play in one of the weaker major conferences and their out of conference schedule is very easy, meaning there should be no reason the Trojans aren't playing for a national championship at the end of the year.
