2007 Texas Longhorns Basketball Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
The 2006-2007 season can be summed up in one name for Texas: Kevin Durant.
The freshman phenom sparkled for the Longhorns and single-handedly led a young, inexperienced team to the Big 12 championship game and a very successful season. The only disappointment was their finish, a loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to a hot USC team.
The bad news for Texas fans is that Durant, as was expected, decided to turn pro. Durant was one of those special players that only come along every so often. He has pretty much every skill in the book, from the ability to drive all the way to the basket and finish with a dunk or to pull up in transition and knock down a long three-point shot.
With his loss, Texas is left with a lot of talented players who really didn't have too much pressure placed on them last year because they simply deferred to Durant. Their experience wasn't as valuable as it could have been last season simply because all of the pressure was always played on Durant's shoulders.
The two key players to watch in 2007 will be A.J. Abrams and D.J. Augustin. The two young guards averaged over 15 points and 14 points, respectively last season and could form one of the top backcourts in the country.
Guard play is so important come tournament time, so Texas should be in great hands in that area. The low post is a bit of a different story, as the Longhorns will be looking for someone on their team who can be a consistent scorer on the interior.
Without a low post threat, Abrams and Augustin won't be as effective because opponents will be able to focus all their attention on defending the perimeter and stopping the two guards.
Ever since head coach Rick Barnes left Clemson to coach at Texas, he has turned the Longhorns into a national championship contender nearly every season. He certainly would like to get the team back to that level.
Texas should challenge Kansas in 2007 for the Big 12 title, especially if they find a low post scoring threat and get a little help from some of their incoming freshmen. They also should have an outside chance as a Final Four contender.
