2007 Oregon Ducks Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
Oregon had a fantastic 2006 season, which ended with a tough loss to the eventual national champion Florida Gators in the Elite Eight.
Interestingly enough, last season was nearly a major disappointment for the Ducks in the postseason, as they barely escaped the first round with a two point victory over Miami of Ohio.
Head coach Ernie Kent did a fantastic job despite rumors circling that he might be looking for a new job at season's end. As it turned out, Kent will be staying with Oregon, which is great news for Ducks fans.
Kent is so highly thought upon by other colleagues in the college basketball circle that he was placed on a selection committee to determine the 2007 Pan American team. Considering the way the American teams have fared lately in international play, this was no small task.
However, not all news is good is the land of the Ducks. The team rode five seniors all the way to the Elite Eight, which means there will be a lot of rebuilding going on in the great Northwest.
A lot of inexperienced underclassmen are going to see playing time this year, which can be looked at as both a positive and a negative. It could mean a rough year is in store for Oregon, but it's also a chance for some of the unheralded players from last year's team and the incoming recruits to step up and make a name for themselves.
Oregon will turn to Tajuan Porter for experience and scoring. The diminutive junior (5'6") scored over 14 points per game last season and should become even more aggressive with the loss of so many of the team's top players.
The biggest loss out of all the seniors is Aaron Brooks, who averaged 17 points, four rebounds and four assists per game. Brooks was chose in the NBA draft and should turn into a very solid player on the next level.
More than likely, Oregon will struggle in the Pac-10 all season and be hard-pressed to make the NCAA Tournament even coming out of a conference that typically isn't very deep. Fans can rest peacefully knowing that Ernie Kent is still around and should help get this team back to the top of the conference in a couple years.
