2007 Oklahoma Sooners Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
The Oklahoma Sooners had a solid 2006 season despite losing running back Adrian Peterson to yet another injury, winning the Big 12 title and playing in a BCS bowl game.

Peterson was able to return to the team in time to play in the Fiesta Bowl, one of the most exciting college football games in recent memory but for all the wrong reasons for Oklahoma.

The Sooners fell behind 28-10 to Cinderella Boise State before charging back to take the lead by a touchdown with just over one minute to play. They then allowed the Broncos to run a hook-and-ladder play that resulted in a touchdown from midfield.

The game then went to overtime, with each team scoring on their possession. However, Boise State elected to go for the two-point conversion and ran the Statue of Liberty play successfully to win the Fiesta Bowl, 43-42.

Losing Peterson will obviously be a big blow, but his injuries over the last couple of years have been so numerous that it has forced the Sooners to adapt to not having the running back in the lineup anyway.

The other big loss is Paul Thompson, who did an incredible job converting back from wide receiver to quarterback and leading the Sooners to an 11-3 season in a tough conference. Finding a replacement at quarterback for the talented passer and runner will be very difficult.

Still, Oklahoma's defense is their staple and they have an excellent coach in Bob Stoops. Stoops should be able to find a capable quarterback on his roster who limits mistakes and lets the defense win or lose the games.

The schedule certainly bodes well for the Sooners in 2007. Their toughest game will be a trip to Texas, and a home game against a rebuilding Miami team might be their second biggest challenge.

With an easy schedule and a strong defense, Oklahoma should challenge for another Big 12 title and a berth into a BCS bowl. Their ability to replace the production from Thompson and Peterson will be the key to their season.
