2007 Ohio State Buckeyes Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
After an incredible 2006 season that ended in terrible disappointment, Ohio State will have its work cut out for them in 2007.
The Buckeyes went undefeated in the regular season and appeared to be the best team in the country by far. They opened the national championship game against Florida by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and many thought the rout was on.
The rout was, in fact, on, but it was the Florida Gators who would dominate the remainder of the game in stunning fashion and hand Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith one the worst performances of his college career.
Smith's college career is now over, as is the man who returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, Tedd Ginn Jr. Both players have moved on to the NFL, as has starting running back Antonio Pittman. Also moving on to the NFL is wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, who was probably even more consistent than Ginn.
Another key loss is backup quarterback Justin Zwick, who saw a lot of time under center in his years at Ohio State and could have been a terrific replacement for the departing Smith.
Head coach Jim Tressel will have a very different offense to work with in the upcoming season. The good news is he had a very young defense last year that performed well, and many of the players from that unit will return in 2007.
One of the key returnees for Tressel will be running back Chris Wells, who you can expect to see get a lot of carries with a new quarterback under center. Wells was overshadowed by Pittman last year but is a very talented runner.
The one thing Ohio State definitely has going for it in 2007 is possibly one of the easiest schedules in the country. The toughest game on the schedule appears to the season finale at arch-rival Michigan.
Other than the game against the Wolverines, games at Penn State and Washington appear to be the only serious challenges on the schedule.
Despite losing nearly their entire offense, Ohio State's schedule should keep the team alive as a contender to play for a national championship all season long. It will all come down to the final game of the season at Michigan.
