2007 North Carolina Tar Heels Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
The Tar Heels were one of the youngest teams in the country last season but also one of the most talented, led by junior Tyler Hansbrough.
North Carolina was ranked all of last season and was one of the top teams in the country despite such a young lineup taking the floor each night. The Tar Heels ended up winning the ACC regular season and tournament titles in what was considered a down year in the conference. They advanced to the Elite Eight and appeared headed to the Final Four until they ran out of steam and lost a double-digit lead to Georgetown, who went on to win by 12 in overtime.
The team lost freshman Brandon Wright to the NBA but return a strong and talented nucleus. Other notable losses include Reyshawn Terry and Wes Miller, neither of which will be greatly missed.
The Tar Heels love to run up and down the court and turn the game into a track meet. Even after an opponent's made basket, UNC quickly gathers the ball, throws it inbounds and pushes it up the court, looking for an easy shot in transition.
North Carolina does tend to get sloppy at times because of how much they like to push the ball, meaning lots of turnovers and wasted possessions. The Tar Heels also struggle to play solid man-to-man defense at times as well, which hurts them in games against good half-court teams.
It will be up to point guard Ty Lawson to take care of the basketball to keep opponents from getting easy baskets in transition. One easy way to limit turnovers is to simply dump the ball inside to Hansbrough, who is a bull on the inside and always finds a way to put the ball in the basket, even from the most impossible angles.
An accomplishment lost in the regular season and conference titles and the disappointing loss to Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament was that the Tar Heels were able to sweep arch-rival Duke, which is no small feat when it comes to that annual matchup.
The Tar Heels are immensely talented and should have learned a valuable lesson in their loss to Georgetown. North Carolina will be highly ranked all season and should be a major national championship contender.
