Gator Bowl 2011 Preview
Posted 11/9/2010
The 2011 Gator Bowl will be played on January 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in Jacksonville.
The game has tremendous history, having been played for 65 years. The popularity has certainly grown over the years, as just over 7,000 people attended the inaugural game back in 1946. By comparison, last year's game drew over 84,000 fans.
Last year's game may have been the most special ever played in Gator Bowl history. Legendary coach Bobby Bowden faced off against his former team, West Virginia, in his final game ever and came away with a 33-21 win.
Some of the players named MVP of the Gator Bowl over the years that went on to outstanding NFL careers include Philip Rivers, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Javon Walker and Thurman Thomas.
This year's game will feature an SEC team matched up against the Big 10. It's always interesting to see if the speed of the SEC or the strength of the Big 10 wins out.
