2007 Mississippi State Bulldogs Season Update
Posted 7/25/2007
Ugly would be the first word that comes to mind when trying to describe Mississippi State's 2006 season, but it's not like the results came as a surprise to a program trying to rebuild in the most competitive football conference in the country.
Mississippi State finished the season with a 3-9 overall record and went 1-7 in the SEC conference, good enough (or should I say bad enough) to finish in last place in their division.
Despite a mostly cupcake out of conference schedule in 2007, the Bulldogs won't catch many breaks in their conference. They will have to match up against Tennessee, Auburn, LSU Arkansas, Alabama and South Carolina, not to mention a big out of conference show down with West Virginia.
A bit of good news is the return of senior quarterback Michael Henig, who struggled last year but will provide some stability and leadership for the offense. Junior running back Anthony Dixon is also back and will look to improve upon his nine touchdown performance from a year ago.
The offense will miss Tony Burks, the leading wide receiver who pulled down five touchdown passes and had nearly 900 yards receiving. The numbers aren't great, but the Bulldogs will take what they can get with their scuffling offense.
Mississippi State only lost their games last year by an average of just a little more than seven points a game, which is an encouraging sign when playing in a conference with so many great athletes and offenses. As poor as their offense was at times, their defense did a great job of battling to keep the team in many of its games.
Fans need to remember this is a program in the midst of the rebuilding process and the SEC is a brutally difficult conference. Changes aren't going to happen overnight, and progress is going to come slowly and in the smallest of steps. If the Bulldogs can manage to win more games this year than last year with the schedule they will face, the season will and should be deemed a success.
