2007 LSU Tigers Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2007
Obviously, you can't talk LSU football without the big news of the offseason: quarterback JaMarcus Russell left school early to declare for the NFL draft, which many experts thought would happen.

It was a great move for Russell, who thrilled scouts with his large frame and big arm and ended up as the No. 1 overall pick. For LSU, the news was not so great, because Russell was obviously the key to their offense. He threw 28 touchdowns last year and also was great picking up first downs in short yardage situations because of his size.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Russell isn't the only key loss on the offensive side of the ball. LSU also loses its top two receivers, which is a huge blow. Both Dwayne Bowe and Early Doucet have graduated. The two receivers combined to pull down 20 touchdowns, a lot of scoring to be replaced.

As if that isn't enough, the team also loses its top running back to graduation in Jacob Hester. The good news is that Hester practically split time with Keiland Williams, who will be back and probably the full-time starter.

LSU did finish 2006 on a high note, pounding Notre Dame, 41-13 in the Sugar Bowl and ending the season ranked No. 3 in the country in both the Associated Press and Coaches poll.

LSU's out of conference schedule for 2007 is pretty weak and shouldn't be a problem, although Virginia Tech at home should be a tough game. Battling their SEC rivals is a whole different story, as all the teams tend to beat up on each other.

The Tigers will get Florida, Arkansas and Auburn at home while taking on Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Arguably the four best teams LSU will play are all going to be on their own turf, but the home crowd probably won't be enough to make up for the talent differential.

With their schedule and inexperience at several key offensive skill positions, don't expect LSU to be back in a BCS bowl or anywhere near one for that matter. If the Tigers can manage eight wins and show improvement throughout the year, it should be considered a successful season.
