2007 Georgetown Hoyas Season Preview
Posted 7/25/2009
What a season it was for the Hoyas in 2006. After a slow start to the season that had many wondering where the talented team from the previous season had gone, Georgetown rolled down the stretch and into the NCAA Tournament.
The Hoyas earned a No. 2 seed thanks to a fantastic 13-3 record in the Big East, which they followed up by winning the Big East tournament title. They played arguably one of their worst games of the season in their national semifinal contest against Ohio State, losing 67-60.
Coming into the 2007 season, Georgetown looks strong once again. Their biggest lost is multi-talented forward Jeff Green who decided to leave school for the NBA. Green was not only a great scorer but a great passer and defender and made everyone else on the court better.
While Green left, center Roy Hibbert decided to come back for another season to further improve his draft stock. Hibbert is an incredible passer for a player of his size and has made great strides as a scorer the past two seasons. If he continues to improve, Hibbert could become almost unstoppable on the low block this year.
Guards Jonathan Wallace and Jesse Sapp both return, and the valuable experience they gained through last season's NCAA Tournament run will only prove to help them in future situations. Wallace showed the ability to knock down open three-pointers in crunch time last season, which will help to open up the inside for the big guys.
Head coach John Thompson III runs a Princeton offense that focuses on cutting to the basket and being patient on offense. It also requires his players to be very smart in the decisions they make, whether it be the passes, screens or cuts. There is nothing more devastating to a team than to play 30 seconds of great defense and give up a layup, something Georgetown did to opponents time and time again last season.
A player to watch out for this season is DaJuan Summers. Summers really improved last season as the year wore on and could become a big time scorer and rebounder in his sophomore year, especially with the departure of Green.
Georgetown will miss Green dearly but has plenty of talent to make another run at a Final Four, not to mention a very smart head coach. Don't be surprised if the Hoyas make it back-to-back appearances in the Final Four.
