The Boise State Broncos knocked off the Virginia Tech Hokies in their biggest game of the season, setting the stage for the mid-major school to potentially play for the 2011 BCS national championship.
As is usually the case, Boise State is really hurt by its weak conference schedule when compared to that of other national championship contenders. The Broncos are still going to need some outside help to reach the title game, but this could be the year they finally get it.
The Broncos will need teams like Oregon and/or Auburn to lose at least one game, and they might need a team like Alabama to drop its second contest of the season, if they want to reach the national championship game.
There are still a lot of skeptics in and around college football who believe that Boise State isn't of the same caliber as teams like Oregon and Auburn and that they don't deserve a chance to play for a national title.
It seems that we will never know whether they do or don't deserve that chance unless they get it at some point. So far, every time they have played a big game on a national stage, they have come away victorious.
This year's team was hurt by the fact that Virginia Tech lost to James Madison, thus negating a lot of the credit that came with beating a supposedly top team like the Hokies. Nonetheless, they deserve a shot at the national title if they are one of only two unbeaten teams at the end of the season.
