2011 Coca Cola 600
Posted 5/4/2011
The Let Freedom Race Coca-Cola 600 is held at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC, the heart of NASCAR country, and takes place on Memorial Day.

In fact, Charlotte is home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and Dale Earnhardt was born just down the road in Kannapolis, NC.

It is the only 600 mile race in the NASCAR season and is run as a salute to the United States armed forces, which is why it has become a Memorial Day tradition. It is sure to take on added meaning this year after news of Osama bin Laden's death.

The race is as much a test of endurance and will as it is talent, making it fitting that it is run in honor of the men and women that protect the country. It's an awfully long night in what is usually a really hot car, so stamina is always an issue.

In fact, the race is so grueling that it has been nicknamed "NASCAR's Longest Night." It has upstaged the Indianapolis 500 as the biggest race on Memorial Day weekend, and it should only continue to gain popularity.
