Women's Figure Skating Long Program Olympic Preview
Posted 6/22/2009
The women's figure skating long program is both a test of endurance and skill and is also the second and final event in the Olympic competition.
The performance is to last exactly four minutes. If the program ends up being shorter or longer than the time period allotted, points will be deducted from the skater's score.
It is the lasting impression for judges, as the long program typically takes place following the short program in Olympic competition.
However, many skaters don't even reach the long program, as there is often a cut following the short program that eliminates those competitors who are far behind the leader.
Those that due tend to be grouped according to how well they performed in the short program to determine in what order they will each skate for the short program.
The United State women's team had a solid performance at the 2006 Winter Olympics, as Sasha Cohen finished with the silver medal.
The team has high hopes for even better results in the 2010 games in Vancouver, but China will be a tough opponent.
