Women's Biathlon Olympic Preview
Posted 6/29/2009
A biathlon typically refers to an event where athletes compete against each other in two different sports in a single competition.

In the Olympic sense, a biathlon refers to an event featuring both cross-country skiing and rifling.

Interestingly enough, the sport got its start as a military exercise for Norwegian soldiers all the way back in the 1800's, so it took awhile for women to become involved.

The first World Championship was held back in 1958 and it did not become an Olympic sport until 1960, but only men competed at the time.

It's important to mention that the competition comes in a number of forms, including individual and relay.

There are also various distances, as the women's races are considerable shorter than that of the men's.

Despite the differences in distance, don't think that the women's race is any less difficult than that of the men's.

The demands the women must put on their body skiing around the track as fast as they can only to have to come to a complete stop, try to steady themselves and then shoot a rifle at a target is simply amazing.

This event is so different from others that you will find at the Winter Olympics, or even the summer games for that matter, so definitely check this out if you have the opportunity.
