The luge is a lot like the bobsled, only it is done by either one or two people and is a bit slower since an actual sled is used.

It is not a sport that the Americans have typically experienced a lot of success, as the United States has collected just four medals in the event in the history of the Winter Olympics. They have also never won gold.

The United States did not medal in the 2006 games in the luge, as Germany led the way with four medals, including one gold. Italy, Austria, Russia and Latvia also managed to collect medals.

Germany has absolutely dominated the competition over the course of time, having won 21 medals. East Germany is the overall leader with 29 total medals, though obviously no longer exists. Austria, Italy and West Germany (also no longer a country) has also been very successful in the event.
