When it comes to a test of endurance, strength and will, few events capture all of those quite like Cross Country Skiing.

When you think of endurance challenges, running a marathon immediately comes to mind. You can put Cross Country Skiing right there with it.

However, Cross Country Skiing encompasses more than just their version of the marathon. There are many different lengths of races, including a sprint. In fact, there are six different events for both the men and the women.

It actually reminds me a lot of track and field just from the fact that there so many different lengths of races, giving more athletes the opportunity to compete.

In the 2006 Olympics, several teams were neck and neck with each other in the medal race. Sweden finished with three golds and two bronze to win the medal count at five, but Estonia, Russia and Italy weren't far behind.

The United States failed to medal at all in the past Olympics and this has never been an event in which they have achieved much success.

Most countries that do well in this event have a lot of flat, open terrain in a cold environment in which their athletes can train. The United States doesn't boast such conditions in many parts of the country.

Interestingly enough, China and the United States had the most athletes compete in Cross Country Skiing yet neither country won a medal. I guess sometimes there isn't strength in numbers.

Canada medaled twice, including one gold, so fans of the host country should be excited to see their athletes in action at this event.
