Inaugural Balls

News and Information

There is no better way to celebrate the election (or re-election) of a new president than attending an Inaugural Ball. These world-class evenings happen only once every four years and are guaranteed to be a night to remember. After months upon months of the presidential race, the time has finally come for President Barack Obama to once again take the presidential oath on January 21. After the president has been sworn in, the country is invited to attend inaugural balls, which are premiere events for Washington, D.C. society.

For the first time in 60 years, the number of official inaugural balls has been reduced to just two events, the Commander-in-Chief Ball and the Inaugural Ball. There is also a concert in the works to honor military families. Both balls will be held at the Washington Convention Center on Monday, January 21.

The Commander-in-Chief Ball honors members of the Armed Forces, including active duty and reserve service members, as well as wounded warriors and Medal of Honor recipients. Troops deployed overseas will also be invited to watch the festivities via video.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will also be attending the Inaugural Ball. In addition to the two official balls, there will be a plethora of unofficial inaugural balls. There will also be a children's concert held on Saturday, January 19, to be hosted by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden. The concert will pay tribute to service members and their families by featuring children and spouses of members of the Armed Forces.

Inaugural balls have roots reaching back to America's first president, George Washington, although the first official ball wasn’t held until 1809 for President James Madison. The balls continued through the years, with some presidents facing major problems - such as below-zero temperatures that killed the caged canaries. Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt skipped the balls, but when Harry Truman brought the event back it paved the way for the major galas that occur today. While Truman only had one, Dwight Eisenhower had two, John F. Kennedy had five, and Ronald Regan made it up to 10.

The balls normally include terrific entertainment and an assortment of food, not to mention and opportunity to brush elbows with elite Washington society - and the president!
