San Diego Chargers News and Information

The San Diego Chargers took a major leap forward last year with their playoff performance and are ready to take the next major step in 2008.
The Chargers were able to reach the AFC Conference Championship game and came up just a little short against the New England Patriots.
Top to bottom, the Chargers appear to be the most talented team in the NFL. Before last year, the knock on San Diego was its inability to perform in the playoffs, but 2007 put that to rest.
Heading into 2008, the biggest concern has to be the injuries to their star offensive players.
Quarterback Philip Rivers played two games in the postseason with torn ligaments in his knee, which says a lot about his desire to lead his team to a championship. Rivers injury is pretty serious, but he is expected to be 100 percent in time for the start of the season.
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson also tore knee ligaments but his injury was not considered to be nearly as serious as that of Rivers. Still, any type of knee injury for a running back is serious.
In addition, backup running back Michael Turner departed in the offseason, cashing in on a huge contract with the Atlanta Falcons.
At tight end, Antonio Gates is recovering from surgery on his big toe. The toe bothered him for a significant portion of last season, especially during the playoffs. After a mediocre year by his standards, expect big things out of Gates if he entirely healthy in 2008.
On defense, the Chargers remain a little soft in both the secondary and at the linebacker position, but they still have one of the top units in the AFC.
As long as their top three offensive players report healthy for training camp, the Chargers should be legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
