San Diego Chargers

News and Information
The San Diego Chargers appeared to be heading home instead of the playoffs with just a handful of games remaining in the 2008 season, but a last minute winning streak combined with a choke job from the Denver Broncos helped them sneak into the postseason.

Once there, the Chargers weren't afraid to do some damage, knocking off the Indianapolis Colts before being eliminated themselves by the eventual Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

San Diego returns in 2009 hoping to get off to a much better start and build momentum throughout the season.

They welcome back star running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who struggled through injuries all of last year and was mostly ineffective. They are hopeful he isn't past his peak and will rebound with a big season.

Even more exciting than the possibility of Tomlinson healing is the return of defensive end Shawne Merriman, one of the top players in the NFL. Without Merriman, quarterbacks had little to fear last season. That's about to change in 2009.

The Chargers will have to overcome a tough schedule outside of the soft teams they will get six games against as a member of the AFC West.

San Diego will have to take on the AFC North and the NFC East, although they will get Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington at home. It's always tough for an East Coast team to fly all the way to the Pacific Ocean and fly home with a victory.

The Chargers also have to face the Dolphins at home and the Titans on the road, both of which were playoff teams in 2008.

San Diego Chargers 2008 Article

The San Diego Chargers took a major leap forward last year with their playoff performance and are ready to take the next major step in 2008.

The Chargers were able to reach the AFC Conference Championship game and came up just a little short against the New England Patriots.

Top to bottom, the Chargers appear to be the most talented team in the NFL. Before last year, the knock on San Diego was its inability to perform in the playoffs, but 2007 put that to rest.

Heading into 2008, the biggest concern has to be the injuries to their star offensive players.

Quarterback Philip Rivers played two games in the postseason with torn ligaments in his knee, which says a lot about his desire to lead his team to a championship. Rivers injury is pretty serious, but he is expected to be 100 percent in time for the start of the season.

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson also tore knee ligaments but his injury was not considered to be nearly as serious as that of Rivers. Still, any type of knee injury for a running back is serious.

In addition, backup running back Michael Turner departed in the offseason, cashing in on a huge contract with the Atlanta Falcons.

At tight end, Antonio Gates is recovering from surgery on his big toe. The toe bothered him for a significant portion of last season, especially during the playoffs. After a mediocre year by his standards, expect big things out of Gates if he entirely healthy in 2008.

On defense, the Chargers remain a little soft in both the secondary and at the linebacker position, but they still have one of the top units in the AFC.

As long as their top three offensive players report healthy for training camp, the Chargers should be legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
