2008 Philadelphia Eagles Season Preview
Posted 7/22/2008
After a disappointing 2007 season, the Philadelphia Eagles are counting on a return to the playoffs in 2008.

With quarterback Donovan McNabb having a year under his belt following knee surgery, the team expects him to be 100 percent entering 2008.

Signs are a little concerning after minicamp, with McNabb suffering from some shoulder tendonitis. The good news is that it is not considered serious and the injury has no relation to his surgically repaired knee.

Brian Westbrook will once again be coming out of the backfield, but don't be surprised if the Eagles sign a veteran running back such as Shaun Alexander to give them some depth. Westbrook is good for at least a couple of missed games per season, which tends to really put a cramp on the team's offense, which is centered around him.

The wide receivers are still a pretty weak group, but Kevin Curtis had a solid season in his first year with the team.

The Eagles gave tight end L.J. Smith the franchise tag, which came as a surprise to many given his inconsistent play. However, Philadelphia still believes he can be one of the top tight ends in the NFC.

The Eagles made a major offseason move, signing New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel to a major contract.

The move has ruffled some feathers, most notably cornerback Lito Sheppard, who is expected to lose his starting job to Samuel.

Sheppard either wants to be traded or receive a contract extension, but he is 0-2 on his wish list so far. Teams have been unwilling to meet the Eagles' demand of a first round pick in exchange for Sheppard, so Philadelphia is more than happy to go into the season with three top cornerbacks.

Philadelphia is in a tough division with the defending Super Bowl champs and the talented Dallas Cowboys, but a solid year from Donovan McNabb should get them into the playoffs at least as the wild card.
