New York Jets

News and Information
The New York Jets have a gaping hole to fill at quarterback after veteran Brett Favre announced his retirement from the NFL for about the tenth time. (So when will he be back?)

All kidding aside, it really looks like Favre has left the game for good this time and the Jets will need to find someone capable of replacing him. While he didn't play well down the stretch, he was still way better than any of their other options at the position last year.

The Jets were very interested in trading for both Matt Cassell and Jay Cutler, but neither deal went down. Cassell had zero chance of happening with the New England Patriots in their division while the Denver Broncos preferred to trade Cutler outside of the AFC.

It's tough to compete in a division with Tom Brady when your team doesn't have a quarterback who can at least somewhat match up with him. The rest of the team simply isn't good enough to overcome a bad quarterback, and very few teams around the NFL are capable of that.

It certainly doesn't help that the Jets will have to play the AFC South and NFC South this year. Both divisions have been among the NFL's best over the past few years and provide very few easy wins.

Speaking of not getting much help, take a look at the beginning of New York's schedule. They play at Houston before hosting the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans. Then they travel to New Orleans and Miami for back-to-back road games.

The one bit of good news is that they get the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders outside of their assigned division opponents, which is a gift from the scheduled Gods.

Still, it's going to be a tough road ahead with a difficult schedule and a major question mark at the quarterback position.

New York Jets 2008 Article

The New York Jets followed up an overachieving 2006 season with a dud in 2007. They now look to make things happen in 2008, and they made plenty of offseason moves to shake things up.

In fact, they made so many moves in the offseason that several of the teams veterans were disgruntled that players being brought in were being treated so well and given big contracts.

That could be a serious problem and cause friction in the locker room, especially if the team gets off to a poor start or the free agents signed in the offseason dont play up to expectations.

New York certainly has some things to settle at the quarterback position, where Kellen Clemens has done little to make it known he is the guy while veteran Chad Pennington cant seem to stay on the field. The lack of velocity on his passes has also made him very prone to game-changing turnovers.

The guess here is that Pennington will be the teams starter as they look for veteran leadership at the position and a player who can try and manage the game and avoid costly turnovers.

It doesnt help that there are very few game-changing options to throw to. The drafting of tight end Dustin Keller could really help, but the wide receivers are nothing to write home about. Laverneus Coles is slowing down as he enters the twilight of his career while Jericho Cotchery lacks the speed to spread the field.

The running back position is also one of particular interest, as Thomas Jones hasnt impressed the team. The Jets had hoped to draft running back Darren McFadden early in the first round but did not get the opportunity.

However, just knowing the team wanted to bring in McFadden angered Jones, who feels he is a quality running back and one who should start every week. I would look for Musa Smith to possible emerge as the teams starter by midseason.

Smith was fantastic at times with the Ravens as a backup but could never become a difference-maker because he was constantly injured. After a healthy season, he may be ready to establish himself as a player worthy of starting for an NFL team.
