The team took several hits in the offseason, losing a few defensive backs, including two who started. However, the team has always had success with no-name players in the defensive backfield and they are confident that trend can continue.
They also are dealing with an aging linebacker corps that continues to show its age, which is why they used their first round pick in this year's NFL Draft to inject some youth into the position.
The one bit of good news is that the team re-signed wide receiver Randy Moss to a three-year contract, which is sure to make quarterback Tom Brady happy and frustrate all other opponents.
There is also that little Spygate thing, which appears to be finally over with and no longer a distraction. While the players would tell you it wasn't a distraction, it appeared that it did give them some extra motivation throughout last season, so it had to have been on their minds.
With the Patriots in aging team coming off of a long season and one in which they dealt with the pressure of trying to remain perfect while taking every team's best shot, you have to wonder how much they will have left to make another run at a Super Bowl.
While they are still explosive offensively, the defense struggled to get off the field last season, which is just taking a further toll on their aging bodies.
The Patriots allowed wide receiver Donte Stallworth to walk after last season, feeling the money he wanted wasn't worth the little production they saw from him out on the field. While Stallworth is overpriced and overrated, the team is now stuck with veteran Jabar Gaffney as their third wideout, meaning Wes Welker is going to get even more attention from opposing defensive backs.
The Patriots are also a little soft in the backfield, as Laurence Maroney has had an injury-riddled first two years in the league and has shown he is not capable of being a 25-carry per game running back.
