Minnesota Vikings 2009/2010 Playoffs Preview
Posted 1/7/2010
The Minnesota Vikings looked like the most balanced team in football for most of the season, but some struggles down the stretch have left many to wonder how good they really are.

The year started out way back in the spring with rumors that Brett Favre might be thinking about coming out of retirement yet again and joining the team. The hoopla continued into the summer as the Vikings awaited Favre's decision. After waffling back and forth, he finally decided to sign with the Vikings.

Minnesota received a lot of criticism for the way it threw its quarterbacks on the bus while awaiting Favre's decision, but let's be honest, it wasn't like they are screwing over John Elway or Dan Marino.

The Favre signing was the biggest offseason splash and has paid extraordinary dividends for the Vikings. He injected new life into the team and the offense and quickly established himself as a leader.

He is putting up crazy numbers at his age, as he somehow has managed to put together one of the best seasons in his Hall of Fame career. He also managed to beat the Green Bay Packers in both matchups this year, which was just icing on the cake.

Favre's play has given the Vikings one of the top passing attacks in football and jump-started the career of wide receiver Sidney Rice, who is suddenly a Pro Bowl player. I bet Favre had just a little bit to do with that sudden, drastic improvement.

After such a strong start, the Vikings really cooled off down the stretch. It became apparent that they play much better at home in the dome than on the road, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

The offensive line has been a huge disappointment for the Vikings. Running back Adrian Peterson has been bottled up several times this year because of the unit's inability to open up running lanes.

Peterson has experienced fumbling problems again, and it cost the Vikings a chance at homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Ball security from the star running back will be critical to their postseason success.

The good news is that the Vikings got some of their swagger back by routing the New York Giants in the season finale. Hopefully, that gives them some confidence and momentum heading into the postseason.

Despite tailing off late in the year, Minnesota still has one of the more balanced and talented teams in the NFL. Anything less than a trip to the NFC championship game is a terrible disappointment, and winning the Super Bowl is well within reach.
