Kansas City Chiefs

News and Information
The Kansas City Chiefs were pretty awful last season, which meant some significant offseason changes were expected heading into 2009.

The first move came in the front office, with Scott Pioli coming in from New England to take over as general manager. The team then let Herman Edwards go, bringing in Todd Haley.

Pioli then made his big move of the offseason, trading for Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Matt Vrabel in exchange for a draft pick.

The team then continued to acquire veteran linebackers, signing Zach Thomas to a one-year deal.

Thomas and Vrabel should help the defense, but it will be more from a leadership standpoint than anything else. Both players are well past their prime and not likely to make a major statistical impact.

The Chiefs should be improved this year, especially if they can get Larry Johnson focused and motivated to play. Johnson wants to be traded, but I'm guessing the Chiefs will hold onto him.

The schedule makers didn't do Kansas City any favors, as they get the honor of opening up their season in the loudest stadium in the NFL against one of its toughest teams, the Baltimore Ravens.

Outside of a home game against Oakland Week 2, the first six games are a brutal stretch. They follow the Raiders with four straight against NFC East opponents, which isn't the way Cassell and Co. would like to spend October.

Kansas City Chiefs 2008 Article

The Kansas City Chiefs saw a decent start to 2007 end in an ugly way, and 2008 could be a big year for head coach Herm Edwards.

The Chiefs struggled in part because of running back Larry Johnsons serious foot injury that cost him much of the season, but the teams offense is in need of a major overhaul.

The teams biggest issue remains at the quarterback position, where a combination of Brodie Coyle and Damon Huard proved to be a disaster.

The team still has high hopes for Coyle and believes he could be the quarterback of the future, which explains why they didnt select a quarterback in the NFL Draft. The Chiefs want to give Coyle another season to show what he can do before writing him off and going in another direction.

Coyle doesnt have much help around him, as his wide receiver corps has to be considered one of the worst in the NFL. Dwayne Bowe has showed flashes of brilliance and could be an impact wideout, but there are no other talented players at that position on the team.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez is still a great safety valve, but he is no longer the impact player he once was.

The defense is clearly the teams strength, but even that unit took a major hit in the offseason.

The Chiefs, unwilling to give defensive Jared Allen a major contract, elected to trade him to the Minnesota Vikings for a host of draft picks. Allen had some character issues that concerned the Chiefs, but there is no doubting his talent.

While they were very well compensated and were able to use the picks to add some quality young players in the NFL Draft, it wont help this years team compete for a playoff berth.
