Indianapolis Colts Season Preview
The Indianapolis Colts defense of their Super Bowl title last season ended much the same way it has ended for champions in the past: failure to repeat. The Colts were really hurt by injuries much of the year but amazingly still finished with a fantastic record and won the AFC South division yet again. While that may not appease the Colts or their fans, it was an impressive feat all the same. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison missed most of the year with a knee injury and now heads into 2008 surrounded by controversy. Not only is Harrisons knee still a concern, but the wide receiver is being investigated in connection with a shooting at his bar in North Philadelphia. While it appears that Harrison was not involved, the gun he owns was used in the crime and it has become somewhat of a distraction for the Colts. Harrison has already said he had nothing to do with the crime, and the team is hoping the investigation is done and over with soon. The offense remains virtually intact, as the team was able to re-sign tight end Dallas Clark in the offseason. They also brought back a former teammate, signing running back Dominic Rhodes. Rhodes had a poor tenure in Oakland but should be a solid backup for Joseph Addai. One of the biggest positives for Indianapolis last year was the play of its defense, which used to be its major flaw. With safety Bob Sanders healthy, Indianapolis had one of the top defensive units in the league. Sanders underwent surgery after the season for the second straight year, but he is expected to be fully healthy heading into 2008. Sanders was rewarded for his strong effort in 2007 by winning the Defensive Player of the Year award. Even more impressive, the Colts were able to be strong on defense despite defensive end Dwight Freeney missing half of the season. With Freeney back healthy, the Colts will be able to put more pressure on opposing quarterbacks than they did last year. Indianapolis certainly has the weapons on both sides of the ball to make another run at a Super Bowl title. The Colts just need to find a way to stay healthy and the rest should take care of itself.
